Long Term Care Nursing PolicyThe death of a resident who was smoking without supervision outside a long term care facility and accidentally ignited her clothing prompted CMS to review and update smoking guidelines.

In a survey and certification letter released Nov. 10, 2011, CMS stated “Facilities must include assessment of smoking areas and provision of emergency equipment in the designated areas. Facilities should also document the means by which individual residents are assessed as safe to smoke without supervision.”
